What time is it, Arisen?

Part of this customization includes your pawn's inclination. This helps to shape their personality, but more than that, it impacts how they interact with the world around them. Each inclination has a vocation it's better suited for, so here's all you need to know about the different inclinations and what they do!

What Are Inclinations?

Dragon's Dogma 2: Pawn Inclinations, Explained (2)

Pawns are your go-to ally and companion as you pursue your destiny as the Arisen. Each inclination affects what your pawn does and how they approach combat. The decision doesn't need to be a permanent one, but it's important to start out on the right foot to get the most out of your adventure.

There are four inclinations: calm, kindhearted, simple, and straightforward. Each serves a different vocation well, but all can be mixed and matched to curate the best experience for you.

Calm Inclination

Recommended Vocation

Archer or Mage

Pawns that are calm will prioritize safety and survival when in combat. They keep a level head and will look after themselves, as well as taking the defensive or favoring ranged attacks. If food spoils in their inventory, they'll get rid of it.

Be wary of giving them valuable items, as there's a chance they will discard anything they can't use to free up space.

If your pawn takes a vocation where health isn't the priority, it's wise to give them the calm inclination, as they can do more to assist you from a distance. If you have trouble keeping track of items and don't mind a few missing things, they can also help you stay somewhat organized on the road.

Kindhearted Inclination

Recommended Vocation

Mage

If you're designing your pawn to provide support, being kindhearted is essential. A kindhearted pawn will prioritize healing and buffs to protect the Arisen at all costs. While not necessarily a healer, it does bode well for your pawn to pair the two together.

Buffs include imbuing your weapons with magic, so it's worth bringing a kindhearted pawn with you!

You can always hire a healer, but why not design one to your liking? Magic-based vocations benefit from being kindhearted, though you may wish to give them a different inclination based on your play style.

Simple Inclination

Recommended Vocation

Any

The simple inclination is best for finding loot and exploring the world. These pawns are curious by nature and will grab everything in sight. Some will even break boxes and other destructible items they come across in their insatiable search for resources.

If you're new to the Dragon's Dogma series, this is a great inclination to choose while you learn the ropes.

If you have trouble finding items or just want to adventure with a friend that shares your interest, the simple inclination is for you. It works well with most vocations and is a good place to start if you don't have any preferences.

Straightforward Inclination

Recommended Vocation

Fighter

Pawns that are straightforward can be blunt, but they're worthy allies. They'll go all out in combat, which can leave them a bit worse for wear by the end of it. Even still, they're quite useful and can help you take down powerful foes.

Straightforward pawns will draw the attention to themselves in combat.

While adventuring, your straightforward pawn may take off to find (or start) a fight. Regardless of what awaits them, they'll embrace a challenge.

How To Change Your Pawn's Inclination

If you don't like your main pawn's inclination, you can change it! You can purchase Rift Incense from the merchant near the Grand Riftstone of Vermund. There are five types of Rift Incense you can purchase, which will change your pawn's inclination.

Additionally, you can also purchase the Art of Metomorphosis tome. This allows you to change your pawn's appearance, but you can also customize their inclination and voice!

This only costs 500 Rift Crystals, so it's more affordable than purchasing the specific incense – and it gives you the opportunity to tweak your pawn's appearance and voice as well in case you're growing tired of how they look or sound.
